Ridgeway Owner Looks Forward to a Bright Future

When Bob Van, owner of Ridgeway Chevrolet in Lansing, Illinois, received the first shipment of 2011 Chevrolets earlier this month, it brought about feelings of elation and hope for a brighter future. Van was informed last year that GM was canceling his franchise, which has been family-owned and operated since 1927.

Van hoped GM would reconsider but nonetheless decided to remain in business selling used cars and servicing GM vehicles. In December, he was notified that GM was offering dealerships a chance to appeal, and in March Van received the good news that Ridgway Chevrolet would keep their franchise.
Last year was a strain with not knowing whether or not the business would survive. “It is hard to let something go that you love,” Van said. “How awesome it is to have people pray for us and for Ridgeway Chevrolet. We have such good customers and they really did pull us through.”
Van said that what transpired may have been a blessing in disguise. Money was tight because of the economy and people were purchasing late model or used cars. People were also spending more money to fix their vehicles. “It’s okay to be thrifty and I don’t mind being associated with that whether it is for sales or service,” Van said.
Ridgeway Chevrolet has taken the needs of their customers to heart. Ridgeway is now working with 21 banks to assist customers in purchasing vehicles.
Despite an uncertain future, Bob Van has kept the same service rates, which are the lowest rates of any GM dealer in the district. Ridgeway’s famous $14.27 oil change with a hand car wash and 27-point inspection is the most reasonable in the area. Van has also decided to continue the popular Ridgeway Fest, a classic car show and 50s sock hop that features nickel hot dogs and root beer. “For the past 15 years, it has been good for us and for the community, “ Van said.
Ridgeway Chevrolet is one of the few remaining Chevrolet dealerships in the area. Many other local Chevrolet dealerships, including Gibson, Miller, Carroll, O’Connor, Watson, Arrow, Skyway, and Sunrise went out of business and more dealerships are expected to close in October when their franchises expire. Due to the high customer traffic, Ridgeway has extended their service hours. Service and Parts are open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“No one knows what tomorrow will bring, but I feel that our best years are still to come,” said Bob Van.
